In December, I had the privilege of traveling to Johannesburg, South Africa participating in the Global Conference on Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Security and Climate Change. The conference ran from December 3rd-5th and featured high level discussions on the Climate Smart Agriculture Alliance. United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon “called on leaders from Government, finance, business and civil society to work together on solutions, welcoming proposals to develop a Climate-Smart Agriculture Alliance and inviting all stakeholders to bring bold initiatives to the table at next September’s Climate Summit, to be held at UN Headquarters in NY.” Look for more information on the budding CSA Alliance in the months ahead.

The Center for International Environment and Resource Policy at the Fletcher School hosted a two-day conference on Holistic Management featuring Alan Savory and staff from the Savory Institute. It was an interesting exercise in applying holistic management to an array of environmental challenges, using 5 case studies ranging from agriculture in the Brazilian Cerrado to Mangrove preservation in Vietnam.
